BCE

Background

BCE Inc. is Canada's largest communications company, providing a comprehensive suite of communication services to residential and business customers. In 2007, the company agreed to be acquired by a private group of investors, a deal which is expected to close during the second quarter of 2008.

Situation

Each month, BCE's HR Metrics team manually created a talent scorecard containing capacity and capability data metrics for each key business segment. Running 44 queries for each of 12 business segment-specific reports took staff six days to complete.

Action

Utilizing our guidance on designing effective workforce reports, the two organizations partnered to create an automated scorecard that would meet BCE's detailed specifications.

For example, a range of talent management metrics would be published across distinct time periods such as current month, current year-to-date, the most recent quarter, and prior years.

Scorecard metrics included:

Results

We built and published BCE's automated scorecard, saving approximately 500 hours of labor per year and greatly speeding time-to-publication.

Implications

BCE's HR team has shifted its focus from collecting data and creating manual reports to interpreting the results and generating strategic insights on workforce trends.

An even more important benefit was the drill-down capability of the Inform Dashboard. This permits the same scorecard to be available simultaneously at any level of the organization, multiplying the scorecard's impact on business unit and HR managers.

In addition, with faster HR data processing, HR results, reports, and analyses are published before the company's financial results are available.
